Bright red-ruby. Captivating aromas of currant, smoky French oak, coffee, game and animal fur. Sweet and meaty in the mouth, with lovely texture and suggestions of exotic spices. Opens out nicely on the back half in a way that few of these '87s do; has a mouthfeel I can only describe as claret-like. A firmly structured wine, with rich, evolved flavors. Finishes with broad, ripe tannins.

Deep crimson with very youthful rim. Strong mineral elements on the nose - sweet and beguiling. Lively, dancing palate impact - very good balance and quite readable Far from thick and sweet and heavy. Excellent length. Very lively and just a very slight kick of tannin on the finish - but it's slight!

Deep garnet-brick. Mature Cabernet notes of warm cassis, dried herbs, mushrooms, black pepper and sweaty saddles. The medium to full bodied palate provides plenty of gamey, dried berry fruit with a medium level of silky tannins and medium to high acidity. Great balance. Long finish.

Extra facets and dimensions abound in this deeply complex and flavorful wine. Impressive for its focus and finesse, though there's an underlying firmness and authority in the core of chewy currant, herb and anise flavors. Delicious.-- Opus One vertical. 11,500 cases made.

Opus One Winery was founded in 1979 as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The wine is a collectible, Bordeaux-style blend that commands some of the highest prices in the Napa Valley. The winery itself is a building that is meant to be an expression of the wine by mixing elements of classical European and contemporary California style. Opus also produces a second wine, a non-vintage Cabernet called Overture.
