(tasted at Dominus) Good full red. Expressive aromas of plum, currant, maple syrup and licorice. Leanish and firm on the palate, with raw currant and tobacco leaf notes. Losing its flesh. Narrows toward the end, finishing with somewhat hard-edged tannins but good persistence. Seems slightly past its best.

Earthy currant, cherry, anise and mineral flavors work well with the supple texture and fine length. Tannins are softening. Tempting now for its detailed flavors.--1987 California Cabernet horizontal. 6,500 cases made.

There were 6,500 cases produced of the 1987 Dominus. It is one of the great wines of the vintage in a year when a handful of California producers made profound Cabernets (i.e., Robert Mondavi Reserve, Dunn Howell Mountain, and Chateau Montelena). The wine is beginning to shut down, but it still displays a rich ruby color and an intensely spicy, fragrant nose of toasty vanillin oak, cassis, and cedar. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine displays considerable tannins, fine integrated acidity, and an opulent, rich, spicy finish. I would suggest cellaring it for another 3-4 years; it should easily keep through the first decade of the next century.

Fabulous Nose, Very complex aroma, great structure and spice on the mid palate. We enjoyed this with great friends at a dinner party as a special tasting and all who tasted it thought it could hold for another 5 years. great success and am glad we enjoyed it with friends.

Great color, aromas and mouth feel. A complete wine. Very good+.

Wine had a green bell pepper fault which reduced the complexity of the fruit. It was OK but not the level of complexity and flavor that I expected. Age had not reduced the tannins by much and the wine was still vibrant. Somewhat disappointing but it paired well with the food, but I would not drink it without food.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1983, the wines of Dominus Estate have been crafted in a traditional and terroir-driven style by the luminous Christian Moueix of Petrus fame. Unable to pass up the change to make what he called the Haut-Brion of Napa, Moueix came to own the legendary Napanook Vineyard through a partnership with and eventual buyout of Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel of Inglenook Winery. Moueix eschews irrigation, acidification, and the heavy usage of oak (18 months in French barrels, with only 1/3 new) common amongst his Napa colleagues. The exceptional terroir of Napanook in combination with his skillful viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques have repeatedly resulted in some of the most broadly enjoyable Napa Cabs available and clearly place Dominus in the upper echelon of this genre. Since 1996 the estate has released a second wine called Napanook.
