    It's my gut feeling that the 1986 is, along with the 1982, the finest Talbot made at this estate since the legendary 1945. The fact that there are 40,000 cases of this wine is good news for the consumer, as there will be plenty to go around. The wine, which has been so special since the first taste from cask, is classically structured, with a penetrating fragrance of peppery, spicy, weedy black currants and tar, an enormous concentration of flavor on the palate, and staggering length. The tannins are noticeable, but they are ripe tannins, somewhat softer than those found in many of the 1986 Medocs. In comparison with stablemate Gruaud-Larose, the Talbot is more developed and flattering to taste today. This should prove to be an extraordinarily long-lived wine, and, as are virtually all the Cordier wines, a marvelous value for your money. Last tasted, 9/97

    This exceptional charmer is deep ruby with a brick rim but less yellow than the Figeac. The nose is extremely opulent by any standards, but especially for this vintage. The flavour is deeply intriguing in a classical way. It's full and spreads comfortingly over the palate. Complete, concentrated and very successful for a Talbot, although the acidity became more obvious in the glass and there was a very slight hint of something metallic on the finish.

    Level below the neck; the wine was showing age with some browning at the edge: some fruit on the nose but slightly dusty; it improved after awhile in the glass and there was some fruit to offset the drying tannins. Needs to be drunk now if this bottle is anything to go by.

    Really solid food wine for the price if not particularly interesting. Classic '86: well rounded, fruity but with good acid.

    We drank this with dinner (Grilled NY Strip) on 3/10/08. It was decanted for about an hour. It was an unusual color...reddish brown with an orange tint. It had aromas of moldy rotting wood, forest floor, vanilla, old smelly socks, lanolin, burnt toast & coffee...unusual and interesting on the nose. It had flavors of mushrooms, coffee & burnt toast on the palate. I could not detect any fruit. It was all earthy and just a little medicinal. It had medium body, was very smooth and elegant with a distinct (and slightly unpleasant) tartness.

    Wow. Opens with mature aromas of barnyard and horse saddle. After about an hour lead pencil emerges and the wine is starting to hit its spot. Quality fruit and so very elegant in the mouth. Long clean finish. Super wine which clearly gains in the glass. There's absolutely no rush to drink this wine as I think it will last 10 more years.

Located in Saint-Julien, Chateau Talbot was classified as a Forth Growth chateau in the 1855 classification. The estate's history traces to Constable Talbot, who was an English warrior, defeated in France at the battle of Castillon in 1453. The Cordier family bought the estate in 1917 and continues operations today. The Cordiers believe in quality wine production with deepest respect for the land, and the results of their efforts are continually met with accolades from critics and wine enthusiasts worldwide. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (26%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (3%), which in general mirrors the wine's blend. Talbot wines are consistently firm in structure with well-rounded tannins, and are highly concentrated, giving them excellent aging potential. Chateau Talbot also makes a dry white, Caillou Blanc de Talbot, produced from 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, as well as a second label red, Connetable de Talbot.
