Dark red, with an amber edge. Aromas of chocolate, stewed berries, Merlot and raisins. Full-bodied, velvety and rich. Lovely palate. Delicious now, but will hold on. An autumnal wine. Drink now.

Lively crimson. Much richer and sweeter than Le Pin. Not glorious, and even with a slightly metallic note. Still chewy and well behind the other two top Pomerols noted here in terms of evolution.

The more I tasted this wine, the more I felt it leaves a lot to be desired. The wine has developed an herbaceous tea, smoky, and cherry-scented nose with new oak lurking in the background. The wine, which has lost its baby fat, sags a bit in the middle, and reveals a Medoc-like austerity and tannic structure atypical for a Pomerol. It is closer to medium than full body, and appears to be going through an awkward stage. Will it come around, or continue to lose fruit?

Petrus is a made almost entirely of Merlot grapes grown in Bordeaux's right bank Pomerol appellation. Although never officially classified, the chateau has long been considered on par with the First Growths from the left bank. The ownership of the estate has passed between the Arnaud family in the 19th century, to Madame Loubat at the end of WWII, and finally to Jean-Pierre Moueix in recent years. Petrus's clay soil is rich in iron and the estate's average vine age is 40 years. Chateau Petrus produces approximately 3,000 cases of wine each year. The most legendary vintages for Petrus include 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1955, 1959, and 1961, in addition to recent success in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003. Petrus's flavor profile typically features aromas of ripe mulberry, black currant and spicy vanilla oak. The wine has incredible power, depth and richness which allow it to age for decades.
