Starts out supple, showing mature currant notes, with herb and tea, then turns dry and tannic. This is intense and better than most of the '86s. The best of two bottles.--'76/'86 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now.

Two of the most impressive wines in these tastings, both of Dunn's 1986s tasted like 3-4-year old Cabernets rather than 10-year old adolescents. The opaque purple-colored 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers awesome richness, mindboggling intensity, huge tannin, a massive mouthfeel, and a closed yet formidably long, well-endowed finish. This wine could be put in a tasting of 1994 California Cabernets and not stand out as a 10-year old wine. Give it another 5-7 years of cellaring and drink it over the subsequent 25-30 years ... amazing!

Deeply colored reddish black wine that shows no evidence of aging. A rich and ripe bouquet of cherry fruit, wood, and spice. Powerful yet velvety with incredible mouth feel and thick flavors. Tons of controlled/precise fruit and moderate tannins. Long length. Gorgeous, simply awesome stuff.

Drank on a special occasion. Wine was spectacular. A little light upon opening but improved markedly with two hours in the decanter. I was worried that it might fade over the course of the evening but it improved until the last sip.

Ruby, tannins fully resolved. Light on the palate, dried cherry & leather notes. Nice mouthfeel and acidity. Reminds me of an aged barolo. Possibly too much finesse, but nevertheless a good reminder that cali cabernet is capable of tremendous range.

Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
