Consistently a low to mid-ninety point Cabernet Sauvignon, Chateau Montelena's 1985 remains frightfully backward at nearly ten years of age. The 1985, 1987, and 1991 have the potential to be three of the longest-lived Montelena Cabernets this fine winery has ever produced. In this tasting, the 1985 was unevolved and youthful, with an opaque ruby/purple color, and a closed but promising nose of cassis fruit, earth, minerals, and oak. Full-bodied, marvelously concentrated and pure, this highly extracted, muscular, blockbuster effort requires a minimum of 5-6 more years of cellaring. A candidate for 20-30 years of longevity, it should prove to be one of the great Montelena Cabernet Sauvignons, but patience is required.

Deep ruby-red; barely a sign of development. Floral, cedary aromas of crystallized berries (raspberry, cassis, mulberry) and graphite; extremely youthful. Thick, large-scaled and very strong in extract; layered and deep. Strong but harmonious acidity gives the wine a vibrant character. Conveys a sense of totally expressed soil. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and superb sweetness. From a rather low-alcohol year with high natural acidity and lower-than-average yield.

Rich, complex and well-balanced, developing nicely with maturing earthy dried currant, anise and sage notes. The tannins are ripe and integrated, offering depth and dimension.--1985 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now. 9,700 cases made.

Blackberry, chocolate and cassis on the palate. Medium bodied old style California cabernet. This is not a big wine. The tannins are still chewy and the wine needs to be decanted. Still drinking nicely with a medium length finish.

Always very good, though interestingly this bottle showed as MUCH younger than one from the same lot consumed in december

Quite tasty, but probably a little past peak. Complex, delicious. Some vinegar aromas right after opening which cleared after getting some air. Wonderful wine.

"This soars out of the ordinary." -TIME, June 7, 1976 (Judgement of Paris, tasting quote)

This quote embodies the dedication to quality and the consistently elegant, classical style Chateau Montelena has embraced since the early days. The current offerings continue to display adherence to that handcrafted heritage. One of the original "blue-chip" estates of Napa, its illustrious history began in 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs struck a deal to purchase 254 acres of land at the base of Mount St. Helena, two miles north of Calistoga. "Montelena" is a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena.

The present renaissance of this legendary estate began in 1972 under the leadership of James Barrett. It was thrust into the limelight after the famous Paris Tasting of 1976 when its 1973 Chardonnay walked away from stunned French judges with 1st place in the Chardonnay category. The continuing top-ranking results are testimony to the efforts of James' son Beau, who has maintained the quality performance level since 1982.
