A stunning wine, Pichon-Lalandes 1983 has been gorgeous to drink for a number of years. It is one of the finest 1983s, especially for a northern Medoc. The color remains a dark ruby/purple, with slight lightening at the edge. The knock-out nose of roasted herbs, sweet, jammy black currants, and pain grille is followed by a full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and well-proportioned wine with low acidity, plenty of glycerin, and a savory, highly extracted, fleshy mouthfeel. This has always been one of the stars of the vintage. Last tasted 6/97

This wine has always been underrated. Shows wonderful aromas of chocolate, berry and earth. Full-bodied, with full, velvety tannins and a sweet berry finish. Drink now or hold.--Pichon-Lalande vertical.

Definitely ready to drink, started to lose structure by end of glass. Lovely, however, with the lamb.

Great sturucture still with purple color; Nose was fruity with hints of blueberry and slight hints of green pepper. Long and smooth finish.

Thought this was a classic Pichon, beautiful fruit, well-balanced, but still the great pencil lead, graphite flavor. Still drinking well.

Chateau Pichon Lalande, known as one of the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, has been maintained by the same family for more than 250 years. Located in Pauillac, it was deemed a Second Growth wine estate during Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its location between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for growing grapes. These two masses of water help keep the air moving, which reduces the chance of rainfall, while the particular microclimate surrounding the Chateau is relatively dry, allowing the grapes to fully ripen on the vine. The climate, concentration of the grapes, and the blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot result in wines with exceptional structure and, therefore, great aging potential. Pichon Lalande's second wine is the Reserve de la Comtesse and its third wine is Les Gartieux.
