($335-$450) Deep red-ruby color. Liqueur-like aromas of currant, cedar, lead pencil, truffle and smoked meat. Magically sweet and silky in the mouth, with superb depth of flavor and a complete absence of rough edges. A huge wine with utterly compelling sweetness and great terroir character. Powerful if somewhat unrestrained. Finishes ripely tannic, long and sweet. Many tasters still rank this among their two or three favorites of the vintage.

One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort!

Tasted at least a half dozen times in 2002, I keep waiting for this wine to fall off. It has been prodigious from its early days, and in bottle continues to be one of the most satisfying wines of this great vintage, both intellectually and hedonistically. The color is still a dense, dark garnet/plum/purple. The nose offers spectacularly sweet crŠme de cassis intermixed with plums, cherries, vanilla, and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, opulently textured, very plush, with a viscous texture and extravagant quantities of fruit, glycerin, and alcohol. It has always been incredibly low in acidity, very decadent, and about as hedonistic as a Pichon-Lalande or any Bordeaux, for that matter can be. It has surprised me with its longevity and should still continue to show no amber at its rim nor any evidence of breaking up. However, I wouldnt push my luck, as this wine is already 20 years old. Last tasted, 4/03.

This was an extremely good bottle of this wine that blossomed unusually early and was one of the great charmers of this famous vintage right from the start. The nose was a little simple and cassis at first and then mellowed into a wonderfully pretty, flattering wine that was much more forward and charming than the Las Cases 1982 served alongside it. (It made me remember May-Eliane de Lencquesaing of Pichon Lalande telling me how Michel Delon of Las Cases used to pull her hair at school.)

A voluptuous red. Very dark ruby-garnet. Aromas of currant, meat and berries. Full-bodied and velvety, with lovely ripe berry and earth and a long, ripe finish of caressing texture. This has always been a great wine. I marvel at it each time I taste it.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now.

Drop dead gorgeous wine with insane length and virtually perfect balance. Medium garnet colored wine with a bit of browning that turns clear at the rim. A spectacular bouquet of leather, game, dark fruits, mint, and a bit of toast. Intense but still elegant in the mouth.

Excellent. Violets, Chassis, Blue Berries, amazingly integrated oak and beautifully long finish. Outstanding. Only problem - last bot but drinking right now!

very smooth, but not as complex as i hoped. bottle had slight seepage, so that could explain the lack of character

Chateau Pichon Lalande, known as one of the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, has been maintained by the same family for more than 250 years. Located in Pauillac, it was deemed a Second Growth wine estate during Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its location between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for growing grapes. These two masses of water help keep the air moving, which reduces the chance of rainfall, while the particular microclimate surrounding the Chateau is relatively dry, allowing the grapes to fully ripen on the vine. The climate, concentration of the grapes, and the blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot result in wines with exceptional structure and, therefore, great aging potential. Pichon Lalande's second wine is the Reserve de la Comtesse and its third wine is Les Gartieux.

Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
