Last Tasted 8/92 In complete contrast to the formidable, impressive, yet largely undrinkable 1985, the blockbuster 1982 Howell Mountain Cabernet is beginning to shed much of its tannins and reveal lavish quantities of sweet cassis fruit. This full-bodied wine is more flattering to smell and taste than the 1985. The nose offers that mineral component often seen in the Howell Mountain wines, a nice touch of oak, and vividly pure cassis and black-raspberry fruit. Although this splendidly opulent, fleshy, chewy wine reveals some noticeable tannin, the overall impression is one of lushness, as well as stunning richness and length. This gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon should continue to drink well for 10-15 more years. In a blind tasting, Dunn's Cabernet would offer many 1982 Bordeaux stiff competition.

Remains the star of the vintage, with its rich core of fruit and earthiness. Packed with complex currant and black cherry flavors.

As seemingly with all Dunn Howell Mountains, this wine is still not really close to full maturity. Black colored with no evidence of aging. Strong aromas of sandalwood, a bit of funk, Chinese Five Spice powder, and deep dark fruits. Still quite firm in the mouth with more than enough fruit concentration for more cellar time.

Definitely needed to be decanted and lots of sediment. Needs to be drunk soon.

Shockingly fresh & vibrant. Youthful fruit notes layered in nicely with leather, spice and herbs. Takes around 1.5 hours to harmomize, but it comes together really well. Tons of energy, could not believe it's 35 years old. Great now, but still plenty of structure to last.

Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
