Mostly bricked through. Like all of the best 1980s the highly expressive sous-bois and spice-inflected nose is perfumed and wonderfully elegant though there is a hint of volatile acidity present. The strikingly energetic, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors possess outstanding complexity on the balanced and beautifully persistent finish. The supporting tannins are now almost fully resolved and the usual bright acidity of the 1980 vintage is present without being intrusive or drying. While this beauty should continue to drink well for another 5 to perhaps even 10 years, I would be looking for reasons to drink up. In short, this is a knockout and could be Jayer's best wine in 1980.

  • Henri Jayer began producing wines under his label in the 1950s from a 7.4-acre inheritance. He is now credited with introducing many of the important "modern" innovations of Burgundian winemaking. A staunch advocate of the premise that great wines start in the vineyard, he opposed the use of chemical controls for vineyard pests and soil enhancement and promoted more of a sustainable agriculture theory. His minimalist approach produced wines of undisguised purity and maximum expression of the unique characteristics of each of his vineyards.

"We tend to count too much on science, when, before, people gave importance to natural things. One thing is certain, the ancients were not dumb, and if they established a tradition it was because of their experience. They tried to eliminate unfavorable elements and preserve what worked best." -Henri Jayer
