  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 80

The 1980 Cheval Blanc is a relative success for this mediocre vintage. Medium ruby, with a moderately intense bouquet of herbal, cedary, fruity scents, this wine has medium body, adequate concentration, and a supple, soft finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 10/90.

Though fading now, this light, silky red still shows some fresh cherry flavor, along with raisin, cedar and brown sugar notes. Drink now.--Cheval-Blanc vertical.

Great right now, perfect balance of merlot and cab franc, drank well above my expectations.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, a 1er Grand Cru Classe (A), is the most renowned and sought-after producer in the St. Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The estate's 37 hectares yield primarily Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with small percentages of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard soils consist of sand, clay and gravel; the clay soil lending opulence and the gravel more tannin structure to the wine. Cheval Blanc is characterized by aromatic complexity such as Asian spice and finesse that lasts through the finish. This Cabernet Franc-based blend has the staying power to age at least 10 to 50 years for the best vintages.
