A surprise, showing plenty of ripe and exotic fruit for the vintage. Dark-ruby in color, with ripe plum and earth character. Full-bodied, with a long chocolate, berry finish. Drink now or hold.--Pichon-Lalande vertical.

Undoubtedly a top success for the vintage, Pichon-Lalande's 1979 exhibits a dark garnet color with some amber at the edge. It offers a fragrant, cedary, roasted herb, and cassis-scented nose. Rich, with medium body, well-integrated tannin, and some acidity, this is the quintessentially elegant style of Bordeaux that is found nowhere else in the world. Last tasted 6/97

A big surprise. 1979 is not a famous vintage year, so when friends brought it over, no great expectations were held. But it opened beautifully and in a blind tasting would have been surely taken for a better year. All the classical Pauillac characteristics, a delight.

Very impressive. Rich, layered nose of sweet, mature fruits, cigar, cedar, and vegetal notes. Damp earth and leaves, very autumnal. Great richness and balance on the palate. Definitely agree with the sentiment of this wine having an |intellectual| character, but there was certainly also a |superficial| level of enjoyment as well.

Chateau Pichon Lalande, known as one of the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, has been maintained by the same family for more than 250 years. Located in Pauillac, it was deemed a Second Growth wine estate during Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its location between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for growing grapes. These two masses of water help keep the air moving, which reduces the chance of rainfall, while the particular microclimate surrounding the Chateau is relatively dry, allowing the grapes to fully ripen on the vine. The climate, concentration of the grapes, and the blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot result in wines with exceptional structure and, therefore, great aging potential. Pichon Lalande's second wine is the Reserve de la Comtesse and its third wine is Les Gartieux.
