1977 Sandeman Vintage Port
PORTUGAL / PORTO/DOURO /
Wine Spectator | Rating: 91
Dark ruby-garnet. Very floral on the nose, with loads of berry character and hints of custard pie. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with a wonderful mouthfeel. Smooth and caressing, with lots of fruit. Complex finish of strawberry, coffee and custard. A real beauty. This turned out much better than I would have ever imagined. Relatively simple pale rose red. Licorice, faintly, on the nose. Lots of tannin still but the overall impression is of a wine that is quite unknit. Still very chewy but is there enough fruit there to see it through? Lacks middle. Some spirit evident.Author: Jancis RobinsonBuying Guide - 2nd Edition (1989) | Rating: 87
Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced, but rarely does a Sandeman tawny or vintage port hit the true heights that a Dow, Fonseca, Taylor, or Graham will.Author: Robert Parker

Garnet in color. Low rim variation. Slow legs. Nose: Raisin, Fig, Apricot, & Plum. On the palate: Blackberry, Cranberry, Raspberry, Red Currant, Black currant (cassis), with Fig, Raisin, and Prune. Medium/Full bodied. Silky texture. Long finish. Lots of fruit, very smooth, and long finish make this a great old Port. Excellent with high quality chocolates, dried fruits, or all by itself.Author: CognacFrank
