Completely bricked through with sweet secondary and tertiary aromas and abundant sous bois notes. This remains very pretty and remarkably rich with none of the excess acidity (especially volatile acidity) problems that many less successful 72s display today. The 72 is now more about the character of old Burgundy than that of Clos des Ducs, it is thoroughly delicious if not profound as it has now evolved into a concentrated essence of pinot with lots of dried orange peel and roasted earth flavors and that subtle mouth coating velvety texture that makes for a satisfying drinking experience. This too is holding its own though there is no reason or benefit to delay any further. Tasted on multiple occasions with consistent notes.

The 1972 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs should have been a write-off given the reputation of the vintage, although experience has told me not to dismiss '72s. Sure enough, it has a respectable if muffled, leathery bouquet with hints of marmalade. The palate is light and simple, but undeniably balanced with unanticipated dried honeyed tones towards the finish. No, it does not have the breeding of the substance of a Clos des Ducs, but I happily finished my glass.
