Magnum.A very magnificent wine with much more fruit and charm than many 1970 bordeaux. Real life and luxuriousness of lacy texture. Very complete. More solid and substantial than the 1975, and purer too. Very sweet and smooth even at 36 years old and far from decrepit. A fine representative of both vintage and commune.

Medium-deep garnet; cedar, tar and black truffle nose, with cassis emerging; very ripe and rich, with mature fruit flavors, a sinewy texture and great length; at its peak.

Not yet fully mature, the 1970 Palmer is one of the great wines of the vintage. It exhibits a dark, opaque garnet color, and an emerging, fabulously complex, exotic nose of licorice, over-ripe plums and blackcurrants, soy, cedar, and minerals. Rich and concentrated, with medium to full body, a sweet inner-core of fruit, firm but silky tannin, and a long, rich finish, this remains a youthful, potentially superb Palmer. While approachable, it will benefit from another 3-5 years of cellaring, and will keep through the first 10-15 years of the next century.

decanted and drank over the night. cork saturated but in one piece and level at top shoulder. colour: garnet core with tawny rim. young looking considering its nearly 40 years old. nose: saddle leather and tobacco. very nice classic old claret. plum? black berries coming through with time. taste: great acidity and persistent finish. this is mature now and is lovely to drink. red cherry core with a slight taste of ginger on the finish? I like this a lot.

Do they still make 'em like this? Auction bottle. Deeply held aromas released in the glass: red fruits, earthy loam, licorice, and forest. Full bodied, vigorous, bright and very long. Excellent paired with morels in sauce, and a rare hangar steak. This 70 is at a lofty and extended peak now, with a 60 year lifespan. Fantastic.

fine colour; a faint hint of the standard |cigarbox| nose with some fruits; the red fruits came through on the palate but did not last long; there was some dryness; clearly it was past its peak Garret's note: very light robe; a touch of clove on the nose; very dry, tannins gone, dried fruit but some cherry on the palate and a mellow finish

Although Palmer stands among ten Third Growth properties located in Margaux, its primary rival for best of appellation comes from the first growth estate Chateau Margaux. Palmer's original name was Chateau de Gascq, but was changed to its owner's namesake after its purchase by General Charles Palmer in 1814. The current owners are the descendants of the Sichel and Mahler-Besse families, who acquired the property in the early 20th century.

Chateau Palmer is traditionally made with the assemblage containing a higher-than-average percentage of Merlot (up to 40%). The vineyards are situated on gravelly stone over bedrock. Palmer wines are generally rich, supple and a very fruit-forward in character. In addition to its grand vin, Chateau Palmer also produces a second wine called Alter Ego de Palmer, previously known as Reserve de General.
