Tempranillo
Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
