VinCellar's new iPhone-optimized site

Categories: Software

When I wrote my post last week about our iPhone app for WinePrices.com, I mentioned that our next one in the queue was for VinCellar, our free online cellar management application.  But I had no idea that our Director of Engineering, Yilmaz Oztanir, had secretly been developing a mobile version of VinCellar for the past month in his spare time.  I was given a surprise demo in the middle of the week and it was so good, we decided to just release it in beta form to users to gather their feedback and suggestions for improvement.  See Yilmaz's post in Vinfolio's Forums titled "VinCellar iPhone site, VinCellar goes mobile for details on what it can do, more screenshots, and, best of all, how to start using it immediately.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is an iPhone-optmized web site as opposed to an iPhone application which could enable other features such as offline use and perhaps the camera capability for scanning bar coodes.  We're still planning on doing an iPhone app but you'll find immediate benefits in using this solution now. Please post product suggestions in our Forums as a reply to Yilmaz's post.

Hi, Steve. I pretty much like your auction index feature which saves me a lot of time to collect the data myself. But I think there are still some improvements can be done. Like the auction index actually doesn't consider the buyer's premium. Also, liquidity() is an important problem to consider.

I am living in HK. So for me, shipping is also a problem to consider. Why not position all such events (perhaps those renowned vineyards as well) in Google Map? This may bring great convenience for users like me.

Just a few suggestions. Hope vinfolio will be the RP on Internet.

All auction prices already include the buyer's premium (and always have). As you probably know, the auction premium varies between auction houses and even from auction to auction but we manage that as part of the data capture process. The detailed transaction data is also available if you wish to see the number of transactions and bottles per lot. That info is best seen on our www.wineprices.com site but is also available within VinCellar.

Vinfolio ships to Hong Kong frequently so don't let that stop you from buying wine on our U.S. site!

Thanks, Steve. Probably I am wrong. I used Feb data from several auction houses, checked some wines and thought the premium is not considered. Anyway, it's good to know its comprehensiveness.
