Vinfolio to open Hong Kong operations

Categories: Asia , Blogging/PR

Vinfolio is taking immediate steps to launch its first international operations in Hong Kong by Fall 2008.  See today's press release.  Here are a few factors which drove the decision:

  • The demand for fine wine has been growing steadily in the region and we expect it to continue.
  • The recent elimination of wine duties in Hong Kong provided a further catalyst and, over time, will create pressure for other countries to cut duties, too.
  • Hong Kong offers an attractive business environment and excellent location from which to serve neighboring geographies, especially mainland China.
  • The weak U.S. dollar is stimulating more Asian buyers to focus on the U.S. market to buy their fine wine.
  • Additional wine storage services are needed to support the arrival of wine historically stored outside Hong Kong.  Vinfolio's experience in running a full-service storage facility in San Francisco combined with our VinCellar online cellar management software create competitive differentiation for our services.

Next steps

I will be in Hong Kong again from April 8-11 to begin exploring warehouse and office locations.  In addition, we'll start searching for a Managing Director/General Manager hire.

Bottom line: The fine wine business is global and Vinfolio's operations need to mirror the market to maximize our opportunities.  This is no doubt only the first step in the globalization of our business.

This is such a great news. Once Vinfolio Hong Kong branch has been established, can I then be able to move my wines from your San Francisco storage to this new Hong Kong facility? Because I live in Thailand, so it will be very convenient for me to just fly to HK to bring back some of my wines.

Yes, you'll be able to move your wine to Hong Kong and store it there.

"Vinfolio will hold part of its retail inventory in Hong Kong and create a new version of its website"

How will a online buyer know where the wine is then? Even if the 'new version' denotes where the wine is stored>>> If the wine is in HK, then wouldn't shipping to a USA address be cost prohibitive if buying a lower cost, single bottle? Vice versa for same going the other way.

You currently list 108 wines

We will have 2 separate ecommerce sites. The HK site (www.vinfolio.hk, which currently does not have a "wine store" on it) will represent inventory that is stored in our HK warehouse and will be priced in HK dollars (the U.S. site represents inventory in San Francisco). Any purchase from there will need to be shipped or delivered from our HK warehouse. We are not setting up a HK site to cater to U.S. customers so the shipping problem you mention is not a concern. In any case, if shipping costs make a wine not worth purchasing to the consumer, then so be it. We're moving towards stocking fewer and fewer low priced wines which will also mitigate the issue.
