Most wine collectors claim they’re not interested in selling any of their wine but many ultimately do.
Here are some common reasons:
- Tastes have changed, prefer other categories of wine now
- Overbought, need to sell before wine is past maturity
- Didn’t like a wine upon trying it and don’t want remaining bottles
- Financing drinking with gains from sales
- Value appreciation, too expensive to drink
- Divorce, death and taxes
- Balancing cellar between red and white
- Trading to fill holes in verticals
- Need cash for a special project or living expenses
- Changed entertainment style, prefer large bottles over 750mls
- Medical conditions
- Charitable donations
- Moving
- Emotional connection to certain wines have faded (see the Wine Spectator’s James Moleworth’s blog post, “How wines stay in my cellar”, which inspired this post).
Of course, if you do decide to sell, please consider Vinfolio's
