Montepeloso's 2005 Nardo presents a lovely vein of minerality that supports vibrant red cherries, smoke and earthiness. Medium in body with well-integrated tannins, it possesses gorgeous inner sweetness and perfume that carries through all the way to the finish. This is superb juice. In 2005, the Nardo is mostly Sangiovese with some Cabernet.

(90% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) Dark and brooding purple/black. The exquisite Bordelais nose bodes well for the rich, satisfying palate to come. Your nose is treated to a generous bouquet of smoky plum, blackberry bramble, and gravel-infused cassis. Woven throughout are fresh touches of wintergreen and balsam. Insanely concentrated and jam-packed with black violets, black earth mineral (gravel and crushed stone), blackberry, milk chocolate, inky plums and chewy goodness. There is a seductive 'bad boy' quality at play here and the wine has a voluminous velvet muscularity that is complemented by dominant chewy tannins. A keeper.
Unmistakeably Tuscan, the 10% Cabernet does not detract from or disguise this wine in any way. To me the Cabernet was only perceptible on the finish, adding a dry, tannic breadth that was welcome. Typical funky scents of saddle leather, earth after rain, and bright red fruit on the nose; reserved, classic Sangiovese flavours combined with firm structure. Promising and delicious.
