Just the 6th release of this benchmark Douro wine. Luis mentioned the grapes came from Carril's old vine field blends and a small parcel of even older vines with a northern exposure at Napoles. This opened over the course of lunch, tight as a snare drum early on, but later it splayed spicy elements, cherry pipe tobacco, and scents of black tea. Impressively woven flavors of black currants, earth, olives and cherry meld into a smoothly textured, yet muscular and precisely focused wine, with plenty of grip and poise. A wine of finesse and a finish filled with tannins that will require patience. Should drink best from 2012-2020.

The 2005 BATUTA is the latest release of one of Portugal's most sought after trophies, and easily the most successful of Niepoort's 05 reds. There were only 50 cases imported of 700 produced. Dirk Niepoort likes it better than his 2004. I disagree. That said, this has many merits. It is a classically elegant 2005. It has surprising grip on the finish, and a certain-how to put this- subtle richness. Yet, it is surprisingly light, and does not show the density or structure of the 2004. Like most of Niepoort's 2005 red lineup, it seems to me to be a step back, although it was the only Tinto in this lineup that was still fairly interesting to drink on Day 2. It is still very fine, and will develop into a moderately complex wine with some age. It could use some time to settle down, but it seems surprisingly approachable.

Full-bodied and elegant, displaying concentrated flavors of dark plum, meat and mocha, with hints of hickory. The long finish highlights the ripe fruit and silky tannins. 700 cases made.

Quite closed at the moment but already elegant. Velvety with violet notes and restrained black fruit. As with all Niepoort's reds, lovely freshness. (JH)

Niepoort's story begins in 1842 when Dutchman Eduard Kebe established the firm in the famed Douro wine-making region of Portugal. When he passed away in 1848, the business was left in the capable hands of his business partner, F. M. Van der Niepoort. Over 150 years later as the 5th generation to do so, Dirk Niepoort continues to make fortified wines using the same methods as his ancestors.
Dirk is a true Renaissance man, effortlessly embracing the history and tradition of Port while also leading the way as one of its most innovative and creative winemakers. This could be celebrated in no better way than by the unrivaled collection of Colheitas released from Niepoort's cellars as well as by the groundbreaking, still table wines he has created from forgotten old vines. Dirk is crafting some of the most exciting new wines not only of Portugal, but all of Europe. From 80+ year old vines of Tinta Amarela and Touriga Francesa that produce only ½ ton per acre in many vintages, the Redoma embodies the heritage and inherent wealth of Portugal's vineyards and the innovative, passionate skills of Dirk Niepoort. These exciting new wines are born from the same pioneering attitude of Dirk's predecessors that bestowed Niepoort with one of the most exhilarating and expansive cellars of Colheita ever amassed.
