Willamette valley
Situated between the Cascades to the west and Coast Range to the east, the Willamette Valley is a 150-mile stretch of land which is shielded from the heavy rain and cold that rolls in off of the Pacific Ocean. Contrary to what this AVA's name might imply, much of the vineyard land in this valley is found on the surrounding slopes, where drainage and sun exposure are better than on the valley floor. In addition to the acclaimed Pinot Noir, white varietals Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling also thrive here.
