Santa Barbara
Located just 100 miles north of bustling Los Angeles rests the wine region made famous, almost overnight, by the Hollywood blockbuster Sideways. Santa Barbara's viticulture began in the late 18th century when missionaries from Mexico planted the first vines used to produce wine for communion. Two rows of mountains bookend this region—the San Rafael range in the north and the Santa Ynez in the south— and the fog and cool winds off the Pacific, combined with the low rainfall, allow for an extended growing season. These conditions are ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which, among other varietals, are grown on hillsides just above the notorious fog belt.
