Rioja
Although wine production dates back to Roman times, Rioja gained international recognition when Bordeaux wine merchants came in search of phylloxera free vineyards and brought with them vinification techniques and oak barrels. Rioja is located in north central Spain, closer to Bordeaux than to the Mediterranean Sea, and is divided into three sub regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Baja. Many of the best grapes grow on the cooler slopes of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, but most Rioja wines are a blend from two or more of these sub regions. Eighty-three percent of grapes grown in Rioja are red. Tempranillio is the classic red variety of this region, and others include Garnacha, Mazeulo, Graciano, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Red wines earn the designation of crianza for spending at least one year in oak, riserva for one year in oak and another in the bottle, and gran riserva, made only in the finest years, for two years in oak and three in the bottle. Among white grapes, Viura, also known as Macabeo elsewhere in Spain, is easily the most prominent.

Fill to max quantity allows you to fulfill your bid quantity through multiple purchases. All sellers with wine in the requested location are eligible to accept. Otherwise, you can choose to fulfill your entire bid quantity from one seller.
