Columbia valley
Columbia Valley gained recognition in the 1990s as a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon powerhouse. On the eastern side of the Cascades, a rain shadow protects these varietals from the threat of excessive moisture normally found in western Washington. This climate of warm days and cool nights encourages even ripening and intense flavors in the fruit. Not only do Bordeaux and Rhone varietals find success in the Columbia Valley (the largest of Washington's AVAs) but Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling also excel.
