Sonoma
Sonoma County rests to the west of Napa Valley and includes over 1 million acres of land, making it twice the size of its famous neighbor. In the early 19th century, around Mission San Francisco de Solano, that California fine wine found its origin. Stretching from Carneros in the south to Alexander Valley in the north, the territory is extremely diverse and the county's numerous valleys and hillsides are home to an equally diverse range of varietals. Near the foggy coast, and especially in the Russian River AVA, Pinot Noir thrives; in warmer inland valleys to the east, Zinfandel and Cabernet are supreme. Chardonnay, which was planted widely during the 1970s and 80s, remains the most widely-planted varietal, lending itself to still and sparkling production.
