Napa Valley
America's most renowned wine region, Napa Valley became the country's first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983. The roughly 30-mile stretch of Napa Valley, which runs from just north of the San Francisco Bay to the Mt. St. Helena volcano, boasts a diverse terrain. Eruptions that occurred millions of years ago left the valley with dozens of soil types, ranging from well-drained gravelly loams to moisture-retaining silty clays. Here Cabernet is King, but is often supplemented with other Bordeaux varietals. Included in this "valley" AVA are several mountainous sub-appellations, each possessing its own unique blend of climate and soil.
