Languedoc-Roussillon
With 750,000 acres under vine, Languedoc-Roussillon boasts the world's largest vineyard area. Spanning the entire region and using traditional international varieties, the designation "Vin de Pays d'Oc" accounts for nine million cases annually. Principle red varieties include Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvedre while vins de pays is made using non-traditional grapes such as Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. White wine is produced from Chardonnay and Grenache Blanc, with Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier also covering substantial acreage. The region is also noted for its fortified wines such as Banyuls and other vins doux naturels.
