Torbreck - Run Rig
Thursday, January 20, 2011 - We all agreed tonite that Dave Powell is our favorite winemaker. We decanted this for several hours before dinner. The nose was a beautiful blend of blackberry liqueur, raspberries, beef blood, and a hint of a pitted fruit (apricots?). The body was a silky smooth blend of more black fruit, tellicherry pepper, hot tar, and sweet vanilla. Acidity and tannins were perfectly matched to the ripe fruit. We had this to celebrate continued remission. Couldn't have chosen a better wine.

Fritz Haag - Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 12
Wednesday, December 22, 2010 - A nice bottle of wine. The acidity and sweetness were well balanced. We let it sit in each glass for about half an hour before drinking as there was a generous amount of sulphur still present. This blew away though and exposed a nose with sweet ripe peaches, star fruit, and lychee (?). The most prominent taste was ripe pears poached in a sugar and honey glaze. The sweetness was not overwhelming or over the top though. The finish was not that long and leaned towards the acidic or sharp. This was the weakest part of the wine. We had this with homemade red curry grilled chicken in a coconut and lemongrass sauce.

Standish - Shiraz The Standish
Sunday, February 06, 2011 - Wow! An absolutely stunning bottle of wine. The nose was a remarkable blend of sweet figs, blueberry liqueur, and blackberries. The body was perfectly balanced with opulent fruit, sweet tannins, and mild acidity. The body is a multi-layered ride filled with sweet black fruits (dark cherries, black raspberries, and blueberries), pitted fruits (nectarines and plums) and a very mild charred vanillan. The finish goes on for 60+ seconds. Our wine of the year so far. We had this with stuffed pepper soup, grilled portobellos, and toasted bread.

Weinbach - Tokay Pinot Gris Altenbourg SGN
Friday, December 24, 2010 - A beautiful golden yellow. The nose was relatively light - sweet candied fruit, heather honey, and warm gingerbread. The taste was a luscious mix of wild flowers, candied pears, guava, and honey. A lingering finish of honey, vanilla, and tart acidity to balance it out. Simply outstanding!

Kay's Amery - Shiraz Block 6
Wednesday, March 09, 2011 - A very nice Shiraz. The nose was a blend of dark berries with a strong waft of toasted oak. The first taste was pretty much the same as the last taste - deep, rich, ripe fruit with a hint of tar and smokey barbecue. This wine was outstanding - just didn't have those layers of flavor and a finish that takes wine to the highest level. We had this with focaccia pizza and grilled portabellos.
