Stonyridge Vineyard
Sometime in the middle of a round-the-world yacht race, Dr Stephen White discovered his destiny - to create the finest Cabernet-based wines in the world on his home island of Waiheke, New Zealand. Upon his return home, White fought doubters and naysayers on his way to planting his Bordeaux vines, building his winery, and making history in the process. The 6 ha vineyard is farmed organically and meticulously, its low-fertility guaranteed by its poor mineral-infused clay soil. After the first vintage in 1985, quality at this organically-farmed just continued to skyrocket. Best known for the Stonyridge Larose, which in 1987 put New Zealand blends on the map, the winery also crafts a Rhone-style red called Pilgrim and a Malbec entitled Luna Negra. A second label, Airfield, is produced in vintages not meeting the high standards of the Larose.
