Domaine des Lambrays
Though Lambrays' history dates from the 14th century, it's anything but a dusty archive! This vineyard near Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits produced stellar wines in the 1940s and fully deserved Grand Cru status, yet this was not achieved until 1981. Under owners Roland de Chambure, the Saier family and oenologist, Thierry Brouin, (1979-1996), the "sleeping beauty" vineyard succeeded in making a comeback after having fallen into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1996 after being sold again, the new owners, Gunter and Ruth Freund, restored the chateau and re-established the successful path that Lambrays has since followed.
The wines are studies in finessed concentration and exhibit an enchanting blend of fruit, spice and mineral that continues to evolve on the palate. It almost seems interminable in the glass and proves its mettle by aging gracefully and completely when properly cellared. Any of the wines provide incredible enjoyment and are pure and pristine reflections of Pinot Noir's nobility. In addition to the Morey St Denis reds, Lambrays also produces a few Chardonnays from Puligny Montrachet.
