Fonseca
The Fonseca Guimaraens Port house has been making wine by the same family since 1822. In that year, the Guimaraens family purchased a majority holding of the Fonseca & Monteiro Company, whose proprietor required the continued use of his name. For the next hundred years, Fonseca was based in England because its new owner, Manuel Guimaraens, was forced to flee the country for political reasons. The headquarters later returned to Portugal in 1927.
Fonseca's wines have been created by family winemakers throughout the years using traditional stone lagares to produce their top quality vintage port. Today's winemaking team is looking to employ new technologies such as piston paddle vats, known as "port-toes", to improve the quality of its non-vintage port wines. David Guimaraens, sixth generation Guimaraens, is the current winemaker aknd strives to maintain the house's "quest for quality, complexity and structure" as well as its prominent position in the world market.
