Fattoria di Felsina
Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this grancia (estate) was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.
The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena, a medieval town. In 1961, Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and 57 hectares of vineyards. His son-in-law, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, currently runs the estate with the able and adept assistance of renowned oenologic consultant Franco Bernabei and vineyard overseer Agostino Buracchi. Together, they have wrought a portfolio of wines that recognize the mystical world of Sangioveto (Tuscan dialect for the Sangiovese cultivar).
The Cru Rancia (a derivative of the aforementioned grancia) and the Fontalloro are two of the premiere wines coming out of Tuscany today. Signor Mazzocolin is fiercely protective of pure Sangiovese and has been propagating specific, proprietary clones of this "privileged variety" on the estate for decades. Thanks to this unflagging dedication, he is able to refer to a Sangiovese of Felsina that is the parent to various types that are continually cultivated in his vineyards. Within the vineyards are the two soil types that give to the wine their traditional Chianti typicity: the galestro (shale) and the albarese (a lime/clay soil with limestone rocks).
