Domaine de la Romanée Conti
Domaine de la Romanée Conti (DRC) is Burgundy's most famous estate, producing all grand cru wines from 25 hectares of vines. The wines are made in extremely limited quantities and generate some of the highest prices on the market. DRC produces the grand crus Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée Saint Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Montrachet, of which both Romanée Conti and La Tâche are monopoles.
The domaine's history goes back to the monks of the Priory of St. Vincent, who were given the land from the Dukes of Burgundy. They donated 1.8 hectares known as Cros des Clous, now called Romanée St. Vivant, to the local Abbey of Saint-Vivant in 1232. In 1631 the land was sold to the de Croonembourg family, which changed the name to Romanée and annexed the nearby vineyard "La Tâche." The Romanée vineyard was again sold in 1760 to Louis-François de Bourgon, Prince de Conti, the arch rival of the king's mistress, Marquise de Pompadour. He appended his name so as to create the current title, Romanée Conti. The La Tâche vineyard remained under separate ownership and was ultimately purchased by the Marey family in 1791. After a few more changes of ownership, the Romanée Conti vineyards were sold to Mon. Duvault-Blochet, who largely expanded the domaine's holdings (In 1999, a Vosne-Romanée Cuvée Duvault Blochet was made in memory of the family). Beginning in 1966, DRC managed the holdings of the Marey-Monge family and ultimately purchased them in 1988. The current proprietor, Aubert de Villaine, has directed the domaine since 1953 and shared ownership with the Leroy family since 1942.
In terms of viticulture and winemaking, de Villiane has farmed the vineyards organically since 1986 and adhered to traditional, natural winemaking practices. Only natural yeasts are used and aging is done in 100% new oak. The wines are characterized by finesse, balance and refinement. The wines aim to directly reflect their sense of place and have the ability to age while increasing in character and value. Obtaining bottles of DRC is the desire of all serious collectors.
