Cornerstone Cellars
Memphis physicians Michael Dragutsky and David Sloas produced their first Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon in 1991 after having a unique opportunity to buy 4.8 tons of premium Howell Mountain Cabernet from Dunn Vineyards. The wines have received great acclaim ever since. The climatic features of Howell Mountain allow Cornerstone's mountain grapes to develop intense flavors. The Cabernet grapes ripen later here due to lean hillside soils and the high elevation. The weather pattern is the reverse of typical valley vineyards because on hot days, the morning temperatures are highest on the mountain as the vineyards are above the valley fog. The hot morning is followed by a longer, cool afternoon. The grapes have a longer "hang time" allowing flavors to concentrate and harsh tannins to soften. Dragutsky and Sloas, who bought the 12-acre vineyard on Liparita Road in 1997 that had originally sourced their wines, have since sold the vineyard in 2002 to neighbor Mark Neal, with contracts assuring the continuity of their fruit source for the future. Cornerstone makes both a Napa Valley and Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon; the winemaker is Celia Masyczek. Cornerstone also makes another label called Stepping Stone.
