Favorite wines from Vinfolio wine experts.

First off, thanks to all of you who were able to make it to Vinfolio's first tasting event of Tales of the Vine last week. We had a super turnout and I loved hearing your feedback on all of the wines we poured. Mark your calendars for our next event, June 12th, where we will be highlighting American Pinot Noir.

Riddle me this...why is it that one day I get all hot and bothered by a particular cuvee and the next week that ardor has cooled to merely a tepid adoration as I become ensnared in the seductive wiles of another? Am I fickle, jaded, clueless, misguided or, perhaps, just neurotic? No, I am just me, just as you are just you. We interpret our wine desires in a myriad of ways - mood, food, time, place, company, weather, etc. That's what makes my column such a treat - I am in the enviable position to point out some of the pulse points of wine temptation that you might normally miss. Once again, today I skip about Europe, with France being my focus.

Loire Valley:

Much of my youth, during the summer months, was spent in the Loire, gorging upon goat cheese, wild game and, my favorite, duck and goose rillettes (moist, shredded, meaty morsels preserved in fat) and matching them with Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet franc. The offerings from Rocher des Violettes (Montlouis) and Domaine de la Chevalerie (Bourgeuil) allowed my gastronomic and oenologic nostalgia free rein. These marvelous wines engender the incredible potential of their inherent terroirs, as well as the tangible energy and passion of their young masters.

Rocher des Violettes (VF 91 & 93):
This is Chenin Blanc at its shiny, happy best. Xavier WEISSKOPF went to school in Chablis and Beaune, trained with Louis Barroul at Saint Cosme and is set to make this 22-acre property the gem of Montlouis. These are substantial, dry Chenin blancs capable of satisfying the most particular of white wine lovers, and will rival the stars of Vouvray, just across the river.

Domaine de la Chevalerie (VF 92):
I admit it...I'm a sucker for Cabernet franc, wherever it comes from, as long as it is good. The trick with this grape is to allow it to express exactly the place it's grown. You do not try to make a Bordeaux-style wine from Cab franc in the Loire. Why would you? The wines from this family estate are meant to be long-lived and the efforts are shared between father (Pierre CASLOT) and his son and daughter (Emmanuel and Stephanie). These wines age magnificently (look for a 1996 to be offered soon) and will engage all of your senses with their incredible layering and texture. A kaleidoscopic experience.

French Miscellany (loads of good stuff here!):

Domaine Arnoux Pere et Fils (VF 93):
Based in Chorey-les-Beaune and with acreage covering both Chorey and Savigny-les-Beaune, this property understands the importance of gently nurturing the vineyards and coaxing the very best fruit through non-interventionist techniques. One sip of the Beaune and you will fall hard - this is what it's all about! Amazing and brutally honest, this wine is a superb intro to what this domaine can offer.

Chateau de Pampelonne (VF 92):
When you are featured as a "poster-child" Provence rose for Conde-Nast and your motto is "After the clouds, the sun," you had better deliver! This property does it in spades - a fantastically bright, crisp, silky, lithe body that has become the expected from French Riviera rose. This award-winning wine graces the lists of many a restaurant in France and will become a staple for your summer entertaining. I fell head-over-heels for it and am thrilled to be introducing you to the next, great thing.

D'Aiguilhe Querre (WA 91):
East of Saint-Emilion - in the Cotes de Castillon appellation - this wine belies its humble birth and takes you on a rollercoaster ride of intense and permanent flavor. Parker, Tanzer, Hachette and Revue du Vin de France have all tapped this wine with the wand of greatness, especially at its price point. A case-buy to be sure, it will also sooth your furrowed brow for a few years to come.

Gros Nore (VF 92):
Along with that lust for Cabernet franc is an unquenchable desire for the thick, tarry, sauvage and black fruit-laden dimensions of Mourvedre. This is the rough-and-tumble cowboy of a wine with just a bit of a soft-heart. The genuine rusticity is loyal to what Mourvedre means in this part of France.

La Vita Italiana:

This trio is one that will be of great interest to all Italo-philes. First we have what we irreverently (but with great reverence) refer to as the "Nun" wine - Monastero Suore Cistercensi 2006 Coenobium (VF 93). Made by the son of GianPiero Bea (of Paolo Bea) from the Lazio property of Cistercian nuns, this is a grand and queerly delightful white. Next is the Paolo Bea 2003 Rosso di Montefalco Riserva (VF 94), which is a 1st Growth of Umbria. This wine demands patience, attention and a desire for the unpredictable. It encompasses the toil and native wildness of the land and is a pledge to listen to the soil and translate responsibly through the fruit. Last is a Nebbiolo - the Ferrando 2003 Carema (VF 93) not of the typical Barolo/Barbaresco descent. Born on the steep slopes near Val d'Aosta, upon a bed of cool climate fruit and rocky minerality, this is a completely different form of Nebbiolo. But it is just as long-lived and intriguing. Luigi Ferrando is a stickler for detail and a master of bringing about complexity, finesse and longevity to his wines. With just the little extra heat of the 2003 vintage, this wine is very distinctive and truly unique.

Repeat Contenders:

As a reminder, we have also included 2 wines that have appeared in past columns: the Chionetti 2005 Dolcetto di Dogliani (VF 91) and the Pelissero 2004 "Long Now" Langhe Rosso (VF 93). One for the lighter fare of the week and the other when you just need to lose yourself in the depths of black and blue fruit darkness.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, there are approximately 2,000 cases of this fabulous sleeper of the vintage. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue along with notes of blueberries, black raspberries, pain grille, and white chocolate. Full-bodied with superb richness, a layered texture, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds, it can easily compete with some of the vintages top crus. Consume it over the next decade. Drink: 2008-2018.

The whole kit and caboodle when it comes to the cherry spectrum - flesh, skin, pits - lashed together with violets and elusive traces of asphalt and black earth. The core is submerged under cool fruit and precise acidity and builds into a cone of spiced cranberry, raspberry and cola coated with the merest hint of mocha and silky red forest fruits. Pooling towards the end is a delightful bacon and blackberry essence that tapers off into a serious finish. Very few cases available. Drink: 2008-2018.

A spectacular blend of 60% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino. Very traditional methods bring the primary aromatics of tobacco, dried fruit, brine and black olive to the nose. The mouth is a multi-textured cacophony of underbrush, but the blackberry, blueberry and salumi essences somehow knit into a cohesive whole. Layered with reticent and intricate notes of dried, cherry, plum, sage and fennel root with a smoked tea element at the end. A solidity and grip is finessed with an airy acidity. This will reward your patience. Drink: 2008-2022.

A true expression of Loire Cabernet franc from 35-40 year-old vines. An elegant and pure nose of plum/cherry forest fruit with a rich bit of boysenberry that heightens the expectation. The 'iron fist in the velvet glove' interpretation, as its elegance is subtly complemented by sterner stuff. Interplay of spiced plum, mineral ore, iron, and cinnamon bark with traces of violets and pure, intense black cherry. An amplitude that builds after some time in the glass; an ager that will continue to surprise you. Drink: 2008-2021.

Beautiful inky purple with magenta edge. Aromatics of cassis, plum and black cherry flecked with violet and a hint of smoked meat. Easy entry of blueberry, purple lilac, sweet tar and crushed berries with a dash of vanilla bean. The finish is haunted by an element of coffee bean and the elegant tannins add just the proper amount of grip and solidity. Drink: 2008-2011.

Thanks to the 2003 heat, this is not as angular as you might expect from a very cool climate Nebbiolo. A crushed rock and red/black fruit compote of a nose. Like an old man sitting in a stone den in front of a fire with a plate of wild game and prosciutto crudo. Dried and fresh cherry fruit, floral, forest floor and tea leaf all rush to your nose. A pack of dried berry and herb with a tightly focused beam of acidity that releases the bacon aspect at the back of the mouth. Long, drawn out, but airy, lattice-work of red cherry, cranberry and oily meat with a lovely mushroom and truffle note. Wait for the last blast of raspberry and tea leaf at the very end. A treat. Drink: 2008-2020.

Olallieberry and boysenberry dominated nose that jumps out of the glass. Rich and velvety with just a hint of the underlying rusticity of Bandol. Very solid framework and muscular with serious plum, blackberry bramble and spiced earth. Charming, but lets you feel its presence. Kinda of like knobbies on a truck with space between the treads for the acid and fruit. Spring-loaded and ready to carry you into the next decade. Drink: 2008-2019.

Verdicchio, Grechetto, Malvasia and Trebbiano. Welcome to the mosh pit? First off a very definite nose of quince paste and beeswax, followed up by a sea mist and oyster shell essence. Very intense and in-your-face in color (copper/gold/bronze), nose and palate. Golden apple, rhubarb and elderberry all jockey for position in the nose and mouth. Concentration and macerated elements of apple, quince and loads of mineral. Bone dry but blasts of sweet floral and mineral laced star fruits and lime blossom. All over the place, yet focused in its chaos. Drink: 2008-2011.

75% Cinsault & 25% Grenache. Oh the joys of rose?Delicate, silky, bursting at the seams with fresh watermelon, strawberry and cherry. Hint of rose floral granita tops off the aromas. Sparkling and clean with a pure weight. Like an icy white peach and grenadine Bellini with mouthwatering acidity and smooth, satiny finish. Load up on this one. Drink: 2009-2010.

A blend of estate Barbera and Nebbiolo. Thoroughly saturated nose of ink, black plum, dark roasted coffee and licorice. Almost pouty. You are lured into plumbing its depths by the decadent palate entry - grilled black fruit, sweet Dutch licorice and persistent dark chocolate drenched crushed berries. There are many plush and supple layers, thick textures, and secondary and tertiary elements of spice, currants, bramble and mocha. Like a Hermitage on steroids, with a correct acidity to even out the load. Finishes with a broad and satisfying voluptuousness. Serious juice. Drink: 2008-2019.

Three parcels donate to this cuvee. Some new futs. A ticking time-bomb of aromas and flavors. Leads off with a nose bursting with green apple, quince, peach and pear laced together with strands of crystalline mineral. The batonnage it receives gives forth the tarte tatin palate that is further enriched by thick, but defined, layers of stone, meadow flowers, white floral and apple skin. A refreshing density and permeating mouth feel, it has energizing undercurrents of chalk, lime and lanolin. Drink: 2008-2014.

30 year-old vines. 50% aged in futs; 50% in stainless steel. Riveting nose of lovely lemon spritz, lanolin and acacia blossom with a nervy limestone/mineral quality. Bright note of honey and wisteria blossoms. The palate is a medium-bodied playground of crushed flint, white peach, nectarine and crushed apricot and pit. Incredible definition and comportment with a delicate brush of sweet herb and a lime/basil sub-note. Lingering and precise roundness in the finish; bone dry. Drink: 2008-2012.
