Being in this business is like being ten years old, having $20 in quarters and being let loose in an arcade without adult supervision...it rocks! For the last couple of weeks, I've been trying some insanely super (albeit off-the-beaten-path) wine that maintains my theory that if you really care about your grapes, you'll make great wine. You'll notice a couple of favorites from issues past that deserve to be re-visited. The Ayala Brut Zero & Rose (VF 92 & 91, respectively) because it's that time of the year and the ethereal delicacy and purity of bead on these bubblies are magnificent with the onset of late Spring/early Summer. The Biondi-Santi 2001 Brunello di Montalcino (VF 91) because it is the pure and traditional expression of what has made the Brunello di Montalcino appellation great and is drinking so very well right now.
Fine Wine for BBQ Time
Yes, I'm listing to the red side of the boat and offer no excuses...I've been a BBQ fiend over the last couple of weekends and am finding these wines to be enormously satisfying when accompanying grilled flesh (ok, a couple of charred fungi, too.) Lay your hands on the Nugan Family 2006 "Manuka Grove" Durif (VF 93), the Greppi-2005 Greppicante (VF 92), Umani Ronchi 2003 Rosso Conero "Cumaro" (VF 92) or the Contrade di Taurasi 1999 Taurasi Riserva (VF 91) for some rip-roaring matches.
The Rustic Cousin of Montalcino & More from Italia
Italy is obviously well represented this week, again, but I can't resist! Along with the aforementioned candidates, I fell hard for the silky smooth notes of the Dei duo. Dei is one of the more elegant and civilized styles of what is considered the 'rustic' cousin of Montalcino...they don't get much respect, but one sip of these Sangiovese and you'll be glad you took a chance.
I was given one last shot at some more of the Seghesio 2004 Barolo "La Villa" (WA 92), so don't delay. It is such a great deal and performs superbly in the cellar.
Southern Hemisphere Comfort
You'll recall a bit about the Stark-Conde 2005 "Twin Peaks" Syrah (VF 92), but I'm ringing that bell, again, too, because it's decided that it's bikini season and time to bare-it-all! All the right curvaceous deliciousness in all the right places, this is the perfect wine to bring your friends if they are in the mood for some Southern Hemisphere comfort.
The Lone White
The one white today is an extraordinary Sancerre from the 5-star 2005 vintage and one of the top domaines in the Loire. Henry Natter is an ex-military sort of gent (though he still is a reservist and is part of the volunteer fire department in his village of Montigny), but is very effusive, passionate and charismatic. These qualities are deftly transferred to his wine, which is a beautiful and timeless rendition of a classic favorite. Do not miss the 2005 Sancerre "Francois de la Grange" (VF 94). Only a couple hundred cases are made, and not much makes it to our shores.
One to Buy By the Case
Now for the clincher...last year we probably ripped through 25 cases of the 2005, and the 2006 is proving to be generating the same amount of interest, and why not? A top Cotes-de-Nuits Villages for only $26 and built to last - the Frederic Magnien 2006 "La Croix Viollette" Cotes-de-Nuits Villages (BH 86-89). This is a true "by-the-case" wine that showcases ripeness, refinement and sophisticated depth and so much more reasonable than Pinot from California. |

A fresh perspective on rose. Clean, crisp floral and cherry/rhubarb notes in the nose with the mildest hint of strawberry. Defined and pointed ruby grapefruit and red cherry dance on the palate and breeze into a bone-dry, wipe-the-tablet-clean finish. Acts like a Rose Sauvage.

This is what those oysters-on-the half-shell are screaming for! Bright, zippy and cool, bare elegance. The nose is one of verve and delineated chalk, green pear and lemon pith. A bone-dry, clear-as-a bell mouth of grapefruit, green apple granita and lemon sorbet cleanse and titillate the mouth and the finish is the cleanest and most refreshing you will encounter.

An ultimate expression of classic Brunello. Ruby red. Ripe, mature red cherry accented with tobacco and leather attracts the nose. A solid progression of dried cherry, licorice, forest herb and dusty tannins lurk about the very tightly wound central core of dark fruit. Medium-bodied with full, chewy tannins and a plummy, slightly spicy finish. Needs time to reveal its full potential.

The perfect everyday Italian red. Lovely mineral (crushed stone) lifts the violet petals, plum and pure black fruit aromatics. Clean, precise with an energetic spring with pure cherry (pit and skin) and loads of red fruits. The tannins are delicate and elegant, yet infuse the wine with a solid structure. An almost Bardolino style, it is the red for summer.

(80% Prugnolo Gentile, 15% Canaiolo, 5% Mammolo).Very tight at this point, yet with a little olfactory work, you uncover the brambly blackberry and black/griotte cherry core. Lots of brooding dark fruit subjected to substantial amounts of baker's chocolate. Hints of licorice, black tea leaf, and boysenberry abound and are part of the dense, yet curiously vibrant profile. Long and defined finish that appeals with its muscular flexibility.

(Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc.) Lovely, ripe and approachable nose of forest fruit, blackberries and plum delicately wrapped in a toasty vanillin package. At entry, the cherry and leather grabs you straightaway and leisurely strolls through pathways of plum, blueberry, cocoa powder and finely roasted coffee. Fine, long and defined finish that is still integrating. Testimony to the premier quality of wines from the Bolgheri region of Tuscany.

(from Brochon fruit) There is just a bit more of everything here in terms of refinement as the slightly higher-toned and pretty earthy dark berry fruit aromas lead to sweet and rounded flavors that are supported by slightly finer tannins and just a hair more depth. These are really very close in terms of quality and it's only at the margin that this distinguishes itself relative to the Coeur de Roches.

Alive and buoyant on the nose with luscious and fresh aromatics of lime, mineral and white peach with strains of herbs and stone. Elegant, yet deceivingly muscular it glides across your palate with broad, precise strokes of rich, crisp citrus and acacia flower elements. Impressive finish that stays with you and titillates for almost a minute and a half and fades into a pure, sweet mineral/lime tailing. Stunning.

Opaque and inky. Lush, plush plum and dried pie cherry and spice grab you at the outset. This is sauvage with just a hint of civilized veneer. Very concentrated with spice and beefy blackberry, cedar and raspberry. Healthy dose of oak, but it handles itself with aplomb. Finishes with a broad nod to chocolate, licorice and berry preserves.

Full-bodied, rich and potent, with a nose that showcases the elemental tobacco, ripe cherry and licorice that makes Brunello what it is. Expressive black fruit is delineated with sweet spice and a stream of red cherry and wild strawberry. Smooth, yet, structured core of elegant tannins and a finish that is deliciously accented by spice and vibrancy. A delight for the senses.

Beautiful garnet/ruby hue. Persistent nose of wild cherry, herb, tobacco and plums. The palate starts out with smoked cherries, black currant and Asian spice. Decent acidity provides lift while rounding out the plumy, dusty, wild blackberry and earthy qualities. Full mouth that finishes with a berry, chewy and mineral essence. Leaves you wanting the next mouthful.

Seghesio is yet another producer who seems to have arrived at a newfound level of elegance. Fermentations have gradually been lengthened and the use of French oak is down from previous vintages. The 2004 Barolo La Villa is notably elegant and restrained for this bottling. It opens with perfumed aromatics that meld into layers of ripe dark fruit intermingled with sweet notes from the French oak. This superbly well-balanced, poised Barolo should be even better with another few years of bottle age.

A marvel of small production Syrah from South Africa. Meaty, garrigued (Rhone-style) dark fruit tempts your nose. The roasted fruit factor continues into the palate and is joined by a bright and elegant panoply of red cherry, cranberry and oak spice. The grip is perfectly accented with a polished acidity and there are trace notes of sweet fennel and dusty cocoa on the finish. The tannins are supple and elegant, but provide a substantial structure and breadth to the wine.
