"(Red Burgundy) is a wine that can sing like a nightingale, shine forth like a sapphire, intrigue like the most complex of chess problems, and seduce like the first kiss of someone you are just about to fall in love with." - Clive Coates, The Wines of Burgundy
This week we are offering you a selection of wines from several of Burgundy's finest producers.
The natural home of the noble Pinot Noir, and the one place where it is routinely capable of realizing its vast potential, Burgundy is perhaps the most fascinating, complex and difficult to understand wine regions in the world. In no other land can both the nuances and extremes of terroir be better appreciated. The relatively close quarters of Burgundy are responsible for producing a dazzling array world class red wines.
Today we begin with Gevrey-Chambertin, the largest of the Cote d'Or's great communes and home to nine of Burgundy's Grand Crus, we bring you a dozen beauties from six different producers. From small and highly respected producer Bernard Dugat-Py, we are offering the '01 (91-93 IWC) and '03 (91 IWC) Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur de Roy (Vieilles Vignes). From one of the region's most sought after vineyards we have two exceptional offerings: from Louis Jadot, one of Burgundy's largest producers, we have the '03 Chambertin-Clos de Beze (91-94 BH), and from one of the region's rising stars, Dominique Laurent, we have the highly prized '96 Chambertin Clos de Beze (93-95 IWC). From the meticulous Denis Mortet we are excited to offer these six gems: '01 and '02 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Velle (91 WS) and 89-92 IWC), '01 and '02 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs Vieille Vigne (89-92 IWC) and (91 IWC), '02 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe du Dessus 1er Cru (90 IWC), and the '03 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques 1er Cru (93 WA). Lastly we have the exceptional '02 Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin (91 BH) and the '02 Roumier Ruchottes-Chambertin (90-93 WA).
We have only highlighted a few of today's offerings above. Be sure to peruse the entire selection offered below and take advantage of this opportunity to secure a variety of highly limited wines from one of the most celebrated regions in the world.

Confuron's 1992 Romanee St.-Vivant (from vines planted in 1920) exhibits that profound Burgundian perfume of smoked duck, Asian spices, and black-cherries and raspberries. It is awesomely concentrated, with profound fruit that unquestionably came from extremely low yields. Made in a generous, highly extracted style, the wine possesses layers of fruit, gobs of glycerin, and sweet tannin. It is beautifully balanced, with well-integrated wood, and a velvety, glycerin, fruit and alcohol-imbued finish.

Confuron's two grand crus are stunning wines that are among the stars of the vintage. The dark ruby/purple-colored 1991 Romanee St.-Vivant is sweeter in the mouth, with more perfume and a magnificent, full-bodied, voluptuous finish that nearly conceals the hefty tannin levels. A gorgeously balanced and structured wine, with layers of ripe fruit, this wine must have been made from astonishingly low yields. Drink it over the next 15 or more years.

Good red-ruby. The wonderfully sweet but fresh nose reminded me of a top Pomerol: black plum, minerals, chocolate and caramel. Compellingly sweet and fat with fruit; flavors of black raspberry and chocolate saturate every square millimeter of the palate. This impressively concentrated village wine has extraordinary weight and sweetness without coming off as cooked or heavy. A great example of the vintage.

Produced from two old vine parcels (50 and 93-years old, respectively), the dark ruby-colored 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur de Roy has a black cherry, mocha, and floral-scented nose. Its explosive, medium to full-bodied personality is crammed with boldly flavored black fruits. This highly-detailed, masculine, foursquare offering is muscular, and reveals a stunningly long finish. A hugely concentrated wine, it will require cellaring.

Deep red. Pure, highly nuanced nose melds dark cherry, dried rose, minerals, brown spices and a medicinal whiff of menthol. Wonderfully suave and ripe but in the cooler style of the year. But this very classy wine possesses a fine-grained texture and superb penetration of flavor. Finishes very long and youthfully medicinal, with substantial dusty tannins and superb grip. A wine like this is almost more impressive than a great Bonnes-Mares from an outstanding year.

The incredibly rich, powerful and complex flavors are introduced by classy, pure, spicy and ripe aromas of dark pinot fruit notes and obvious earth nuances all framed by an interesting hint of sandalwood. There are buckets of pinot sap that coat and stain the palate and all but completely hide the very firm tannins that presently dominate the finish yet already seem perfectly integrated. The acidity is on the low side the explosiveness of the finish is more than just impressive, it has the 'wow' factor and this should age for two decades or more.

Super-spicy blackberries and black cherries make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Clos Vougeot. While Jadot's parcel in this grand cru is sometimes derided for its location (reaching down to the wall by the N74), in 2002 and 2003 - two vintages where water-retaining soils were advantageous - the results have been glorious. Its dense, pure personality is medium to full-bodied, chewy-textured, crammed with dark cherries, and immensely concentrated. This awesomely deep, muscular, and persistent wine is masculine and displays exceptional ripeness.

Healthy medium-deep red. Sappy, liqueur-like nose exudes a noble rose petal perfume. Great purity and concentration of tangy red fruit flavor. Classy and intricate. Great subtle back end, with suave tannins covered by fresh fruit. Really extraordinary sweetness and finesse.

The ruby-colored Echezeaux surprised me with its almost Pauillac-styled nose composed of oil, salt and what Dominique Laurent referred to as pencil lead. It is an elegant, medium-bodied, sweet and beautifully concentrated wine packed with crisp berries and violets.

Quite a bit of gas and reduction but the underlying character of this wine immediately pushed its way to center stage with incredible spice, positively explosive fruit, deep, rich concentration with a panoply of different aromas, especially blueberries and blackberries and grand cru length; quite structured and quite particular in nature but impressive as hell.

Anise, plum, Vosne spice and violet notes combine to create a seductive but discreet nose that is followed by equally tight, pure and understated flavors of superb precision and stunning complexity coupled with the hallmark finishing austerity. This is a powerful wine of outstanding density and the persistence is nothing short of amazing. A great and firmly structured yet opulent effort that possesses that rare 'wow' factor and this could surprise to the upside.

Bright red-ruby. Vibrant, pure aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, coffee and game. Juicy, concentrated and lively, with excellent intensity and verve. Conveys an impression of stronger acidity and more primary fruit than Mortet's collection of 2003s. Finishes with very fine tannins and noteworthy length. An excellent village wine.

(also tasted at the very end of its malo) Ruby-red. Wild small berries dominate the nose, along with torrefaction notes of espresso and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and very intensely flavored, but presently a bit imploded. Still, this comes across as sweeter than the Deree. All dark berries today. Finishes firmly tannic and quite long.

Full ruby-red. Wild aromas of black plum, smoke and earth; conveys a strong impression of soil. Bright, youthful and nicely delineated; harmonious acidity frames the fresh flavors of black raspberry and game. At once firm and silky, and long on the aftertaste, with very suave tannins.

Red-ruby. Black fruits, espresso, game and a minty nuance on the nose. Lush and juicy, with nicely restrained sweetness. Rather wild flavors of black fruits and coffee. Offers good density and palate coverage without any excess weight. Finishes with sweet tannins. Another excellent village wine.

Waxy, creamy blackberries are found in the nose of the 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques. Medium-bodied, dense, and tarry, its velvety-textured character slathers the palate with candied black fruits that linger in its admirably long finish.

(from a .60 ha parcel) This is really quite pretty too but it can't match the depth and explosive quality of the Griotte. Still, there is good complexity on the high-toned red fruit nose cut with an almost pungently earthy character followed by a very fresh, intense and precise palate impression and fine length. In short, this is an exceptionally refined wine that will also require plenty of time.
