| Transcendental Burgundy from the 2005 Vintage |
April 16, 2008 |
|
|
"My in-bottle tastings of the 2005s have served to reinforce my original belief that the vintage is one of the greatest vintages in the history of modern Burgundy. Almost nothing I tasted in-bottle gave me pause relative to my original cask-based impressions. I remain convinced that the greatest examples are truly transcendental and should provide for magical drinking experiences over a period of several decades and the best wines will easily see 50 years in fine shape." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
2005 is rapidly becoming one of the "beloved" vintages for Burgundy. These wines are captivating, illuminating and destined for a leisurely and significant evolutionary process during which collectors will reap the benefits. This exceptional, across-the-board quality is what keeps us coming back to the trough in terms of acquiring more 2005s.
A few of the favorites - Bertagna Clos St. Denis (BH 90-93), Henri Gouges Nuits-St.-Georges 'Clos des Porrets-St. Georges' (BH 90-92), Vougeraie Mazoyeres-Chambertin (BH 92-94) and the Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes (BH 92-94). All of these selections deserve the opportunity to grace your glass and ply their charms.
We wholeheartedly concur with all the critics' statements about the brilliance of balance and purity that these wines have to offer and hope that you take this chance to discover the wines' phenomenal depth and seemingly infinite delivery of drinking pleasure.

As one would expect, this is completely different as the game and sauvage notes of a classic Renardes are on parade with rich, full and powerful palate staining flavors that offer excellent depth and outstanding length. This is a potent but sleekly muscular wine that will also require ample patience.

(from a .5 ha parcel) Moderate wood highlights the ripe and spicy crushed red berry and plum aromas that give way to delicious, forward and mouth coating flavors that possess excellent volume and plenty of power on the enduring finish. This is perhaps not quite as elegant as it usually is though it may gain in precision with a few more months in cask.

(a monopole of Domaine Bertagna) Slightly higher-toned aromas of fresh red and dark berry fruits that display hints of earth and animale combine with rich, full and quite finely detailed flavors that are serious and persistent, all wrapped in a moderately structured finish. Overall, this is a lovely wine of harmony and balance that is more refined than it usually is.

An interesting if slightly odd nose of reduction and menthol notes added to wild, ripe and layered red berry fruit aromas that complement the gamy and completely backward flavors that are highly complex and possess a firm and mouth coating texture. This isn't necessarily a wine of finesse or elegance but there is character to burn and as usual, I quite like this. In a word, stunning.

A potent and expressive nose of almost exclusive red fruits is coupled with distinct earth and animale notes that can also be found on the very rich and ripe flavors that are also generous and full, all wrapped in a toasty and sappy finish. This really gives the sense of biting into tiny but intensely flavored cherries that last and last in the mouth. This too is a big wine and patience will be required.

(from vines between 49 and 62 years of age) A much more elegant and high-toned nose of red and blue pinot fruit aromas nuanced by mineral and violet hints complement perfectly the precise, mouth coating and nicely powerful flavors that have an interesting saline quality to them, all wrapped in a stony, pure and sappy finish. This is a really lovely combination of power and finesse with a cool and reserved character.

Wood spice and earthy fruit plus a healthy dose of reduction lead to sappy, intense and powerful flavors that possess arguably the best material in the entire range and explode on the hugely long finish. This is an impressive, even massive wine and very Chambertin as it's youthfully austere and backward plus it should reward an extended stay in the cellar.

A layered and wonderfully complex spicy red fruit nose introduces big and rich flavors that are impressively scaled if not equal to those of the Chambertin, finally culminating in an intense pure and detailed finish that is strikingly long and deep. This is a beautiful wine but the Chambertin takes the best in cellar award in 2005.

This too was heavily reduced with a similar flavor profile of a rich, suave and full-bodied mouth feel that blends into a powerful, dusty and youthfully austere finish that lacks the same degree of precision but is perhaps even more complex.

(a 3.5 ha monopole with 30+ year old vines) A more elegant mix of red, black, violet, earth, spice and game notes blends into extremely rich and full-bodied flavors that are dense, serious, concentrated, palate drenching and complex on the beautifully long finish. I quite like this as it offers buckets of character and excellent aging potential.

A slightly toasty and distinctly ripe red, blue and violet aroma nose gives way to somber and earthy flavors blessed with excellent concentration and punch on the firm but velvety finish supported by buried tannins and simply terrific length. Highly recommended.

(from a blend of the 5 vineyards that were once bottled separately which include the En Motrot, Combe du Dessus, En Derée, Au Vellé and En Champs; 2005 will be the last vintage for this cuvée) A fresh, very ripe and moderately earthy nose features subtle spice and underbrush nuances that can also be found on the rich, full and sweet flavors that offer excellent delineation and verve on the persistent finish. There is ample mid-palate fat that does a fine job of buffering the relatively fine underlying structure and this should be approachable young but have the capacity to age over the mid-term. A high quality villages.

Here the nose is an odd combination of moderate reduction yet the underlying fruit is really quite fresh. However the medium full flavors are vibrant, pure and elegant with a gorgeous mouth feel to the beautifully balanced finish. As one would expect from a young Corton, the overall impression is reserved but not taciturn with ample minerality and firm well-integrated structure.

(from an exceptionally well positioned 1 ha parcel situated directly beneath Les Petits Musigny. Vougeraie also has another, much less well located .35 ha parcel close to the main road of RN 74 that was being declassified into a Vougeot 1er but for the first time in 2002 was incorporated into the final blend) Moderate wood spice and a pretty if serious mix of red berry, black pinot and plenty of earth influence can be found on the round, rich and very suave full-bodied flavors that possess ample volume and excellent underlying material though the finish is perhaps not quite as precise and delineated as the very best in the range. Still, this offers plenty of character and superb length plus it's less youthfully austere than most examples at this very early stage.

(there was a reversal of policy and this is now being labeled as Charmes though the vines are in Mazoyères) A very ripe nose evidences red berry fruit aromas with spice and mocha hints that lead to equally ripe, rich and full-bodied flavors trimmed in subtle wood spice notes that culminate in a chewy, robust, intense and solidly structured finish that delivers a real sense of size and weight. This isn't elegant but it's very Mazoyères in character and note that this too is for the patient.
