Yquem - Almost Immortal
September 30, 2009
Tips on placing a successful bid:
  • Research current retail and auction price data at www.wineprices.com to determine a fair and realistic bid price.
  • Consider that the seller is charged a 15% to 20% commission, as well as shipping (if the wine is not in Vinfolio storage).
  • Note the location from which you’d like your wine to be sourced. Wine in Vinfolio storage can usually be fulfilled more quickly upon bid acceptance.
  • Make sure the quantity you are bidding on is actually available in the Marketplace.
  • Remember, sellers are not obligated to sell their wine, but placing a fair and realistic bid will improve your chances of success.
  • Yquem, Château d', the greatest wine of sauternes and, according to the famous 1855 classification, of the entire bordeaux region. It is sweet, golden, and apparently almost immortal. ...in 1787 Thomas Jefferson wrote to 'M. d'Yquem', asking to buy some, stating, 'I know that yours is one of the best growths of Sauterne [sic]'. ...The secret of Yquem's renown is its susceptibility to noble rot, and its ability to run risks and sacrifice quantity for painstakingly upheld quality. An average of five passages, or tries, are made through the vineyard each year so that only the botrytis-affected grapes are picked. The maximum yield is 9 hl/ha (0.5 tons/acre), compared with the normal 25 in Sauternes. The juice is pressed three times, and then treated to three years' barrel maturation in new oak casks. The cost of the whole operation makes Yquem a very expensive wine...” - Edmund Penning-Rowsell & Jancis Robinson, Oxford Companion to Wine

Please note that the suggested bid price is based on what Vinfolio would charge for this wine if we were selling it in our online wine store. This is merely a recommended price on which to base your bid; it does not guarantee that your bid will be accepted. You are not required to submit this as your bid price, though we do recommend you read the "Tips on placing a successful bid" located on the right side of this email.

    • No advance physical transfer of wine is required prior to marking wine for sale.
    • Wine sold from Vinfolio storage incurs a 15% seller’s commission vs. 20% from other locations.
    • Buyers place bids on wines and there is no buyer’s premium.
    • Vinfolio is the intermediary and all wines must pass our stringent inspection guidelines.
    • After a bid is accepted, fulfillment averages about a week for wines in Vinfolio storage and 3-4 weeks for wines stored offsite.
