With blockbuster vintages such as 1997, 2001, and the recently released 2004, the wines of Tuscany have a great deal to offer. From Super Tuscans - predominantly Cabernet and Merlot-based and considered by many to be the cutting edge of Italian wine-making; to Brunello di Montalcino - often thought to be the best representation of Sangiovese anywhere in the world; and Chianti Classico Riserva - known as the best and most elegant bottlings from the wineries of the region there is certainly something in Tuscany for every palate and every cellar. Here are a few of our personal favorites:

2006 Petrolo Galatrona (96 WS) - “Big and fleshy, with loads of blackberry, dark chocolate, olive and vanilla character. Full and chewy, with beautiful ripe fruit and quality tannins. This is juicy. Layered, dense and beautiful. A Merlot for the cellar.” - James Suckling, Wine Spectator

1997 Banfi Brunello di Montalcino (97 IWC) - “...Quite juicy, but also sumptuous and deep, with rich flavors of mocha, espresso and anise over a firm mineral backbone. There is no evidence of excess weight in spite of the wine generous structure. The long close features glossy tannins and a flavor of cassis. At once powerful and elegant...Castello Banfi is arguably the one making the best Brunellos today, with a remarkable string of successes since 1990” - Edward Beltrami, International Wine Cellar

2004 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva il Poggio (93 WA) - “...simply gorgeous. It is a layered, finessed wine of notable detail, with tons of potential hiding behind its restrained facade...Although the wine is beautifully balanced today, it requires additional cellaring to blossom fully. In 2004 Il Poggio was aged exclusively in aged tonneaux, which signals a move away from a percentage of new oak and smaller barrels that recent previous vintage had seen. The change in aging regime seems to allow for the full breadth of the unique qualities of Sangiovese and the Il Poggio vineyard to come through.” - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate
