Deep red-ruby. Initially mute nose opened with air to show blackberry, raspberry, minerals and spicecake. Broad, high-toned and sweet, with complex notes of minerals, dried flowers, spice and woodsmoke. Very Old World in its texture and rising finish. An edge of acidity on the finish suggests that it should be cellared for at least a couple of years. After 24 hours in the recorked bottle, this showed aromas of black plum, tobacco and honey and a rich but restrained sweetness to its dark raspberry flavor. Fruit from this property, adjacent to Hamilton Russell and under the same ownership, previously went into Southern Right wines, but this is now a separate venture. This is the first Ashbourne bottling since the superb 2001, which I reviewed under Hamilton Russell Vineyards in Issue 119. (Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL)
