Producer Notes

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. Interestingly enough, their original and continuing business (over three centuries worth!) is the manufacture of traditional terracotta. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich... More »

Ruby-garnet color. Berry aromas display an almost pinot-like delicacy and fragrance, complemented by subtle oakiness. Round and silky on the palate; ripe fruit shows the customary freshness of this wine but with notably lower acidity than in the past. Vigorous on the back end.

Lovely development on the nose. A sweet middle. Tense and dense. Lots there.

There are 3,500 cases of the 1997 Flaccianello, a 100% Sangiovese aged in new French oak for 18 months. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by a strikingly fragrant nose of saddle leather, cedar, licorice, vanilla, and black cherry/blackberry fruit. The wine possesses medium to full body, gorgeous delineation, fine ripeness, and a sweet, glycerin-imbued, long finish. Given the vintage's glycerin level and opulence, it can be drunk now, but it promises to last for 15 or more years.

This builds and builds and builds on the palate. Gorgeous aromas of ripe berries, meat and spices. Full-bodied, with polished, well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. Give it time. 5,000 cases made.

from the earth -- decanted 2 hours ahead and was perfect when poured. I may pull the 2nd bottle within 2010.

A wonderful Sangiovese from an excellent vintage, with plenty of stuffing left....medium-full bodied, all the typical red fruit and earth notes

I tip my hat to you, Flaccianello, for the entire table was gasping for air as you were poured! Few wines exhibit such class and are endowed w/ such seamless finesse to charm the pants out of me this easily, but this wine nearly encapsulated what I believe the Tuscan soul is all about. The Lafite of Sangiovese was firing on all cylinders last night, showcasing loam, cured meat, peppercorns, cigar box, and the essence of blackberry in such an opulent but poised package. Profoundly constructed and wonderfully refined, a true benchmark for modern Sangiovese that nearly left me speechless.

Started off with very stinky nose of manure that took two days to blow off! Very intense flavor with cinnamon notes, finally came into its own after a couple of days. Seems like it could use much more time.
