(from widely spaced 26-year-old vines): Good deep red. Brambly huckleberry and blueberry on the nose, along with hints of black cherry and earthy spices. Sappy, juicy and sweet, with a suave grain and lovely inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of wild berries, cola spices and sexy oak. Very supple pinot with a long, ripe, rising finish perked up by a peppery accent.

The 2011 Pinot Noir Ryan Widdoes Vineyard stands out for its deep, implosive personality. Juicy dark cherries, incense, hard candy and spices all flesh out in this large-scaled, voluptuous Pinot. This is a surprisingly structured powerful wine with a seemingly bright, bright future. Today, the smokiness from the medium-toast Remond barrels is a bit noticeable, but if that element subsides over time, I expect the 2011 Ryan will come at the high end of my rating. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2023.

Ripe plum and black cherry notes are at the forefront of this modestly complex version, framed by fine-grained tannins and loamy earth details. Tilts toward the dry side on the finish.
