(a 54/46 blend of merlot and cabernet franc): Medium red-ruby. Knockout perfume of raspberry, caramel, lead pencil, tobacco and licorice. Silky on entry, then vibrant and delineated in the middle palate, offering insinuating intensity to its flavors of dark berries, sandalwood and minerals. Combines a texture of liquid silk with uncanny energy and definition and a light touch. Finishes with outstanding building perfume and lift. A great and classic example of its vintage.

The 2011 H Block Hudson Vineyards is an intriguing blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc, a Cheval Blanc or Ausone-like composition. It possesses a blue/purple color, good fruit, a soft underbelly, ripe tannin, spice box from oak barrels, a moderate, medium-bodied texture and good length. It is slightly more downsized than one might expect, but it is very well-made. This wine's dense purple color is followed by abundant aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, subtle smoke, and a truffle-infused earthiness.

About This Producer

Not quite a newcomer, in terms of the powers behind it, Arietta was founded in 1996 as a partnership between renowned winemaker John Kongsgaard, his wife Maggy, and wine auctioneer Fritz Hatton. The Hudson Ranch (Napa/Carneros) provides the mostly Cabernet Franc of H Block and the Merlot and Syrah of Variation One. Make sure to try some of their first foray into the realm of white On The White Keys which is made from hillside Sauvignon Blanc and old vine Semillon.
