(Mostly syrah, with a bit of roussanne; made with 50% whole clusters and 15.6% alcohol): Inky purple. Heady, floral- and spice-accented scents of black and blue fruits, incense and licorice. Stains the palate with intense cassis and blueberry flavors that are lifted by vibrant spice and floral pastille nuances. Becomes sweeter and more energetic with air and finishes with superb clarity and length and smooth, fully absorbed tannins. This is on the short list of the best wines that I tasted from California this year.

The class of the lineup, the 2011 Syrah Bone Rock, which was co-fermented with a touch of Roussanne and Mourvedre, is most likely the wine of the vintage. Tasting like a young 2010 Cornas, with searing pepper, mineral, raspberry, flowers and savory meatiness, it hits the palate with a deep, concentrated profile that carries awesome purity, an incredible texture and blockbuster length. All I can say is that I hope it shows this good from bottle! Drink 2016-2026.
