Reviews For This Wine

Burghound | 89

Like the Fixin this is quite somber as well with a complex nose of dark berries and earth that are trimmed in both wood and sauvage hints. The robust, detailed and focused flavors are slightly riper while displaying good tension and punch on the firm but not overly austere finish that is long, saline-inflected and balanced. This offers very good quality for its level.

Good bright, dark red. Red cherry, raspberry and sweet oak scents on the nose. Rich, sweet and pliant; a step up in creaminess and volume from the regular village offering. Lovely high-toned red fruit and floral flavors linger nicely on the broad, long finish, which features sweet, suave tannins. This was aged in 70% new oak but wears it lights.

As it often is, the 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is one of the highlights in the range. Silky, layered and polished to the core, the 2011 is open and inviting today. Sweet floral and savory notes flesh out on the resonant finish. In 2011, the Vieilles Vignes is all about silk and finesse.

About This Producer

This relatively young domaine - founded in the early 1980s - has a tragic history. Just as Denis Mortet, and his acclaimed wines, were attaining great success, M. Mortet took his own life (January 2006). However, we are left with a domaine whose immaculate vineyards span 10 hectares in 14 different appellations. The wines are intense, pure, undeniably rich pleasures to drink and age. 100% new French oak is used on all of the wines. The 2005s are the last vintage that he tended from vine to bottle and perfectly honor his limitless passion and commitment to making the very best he could.
