Brilliant ruby. Black raspberry, cherry compote, blood orange and Asian spices on the heady nose. Shows excellent depth and focus, with sweet dark berry and floral pastille flavors picking up a smoky nuance with aeration. Finishes sappy, sweet and very long, with silky tannins sneaking up on the back end.

Another knockout effort from this estate, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is one of the top base cuvees in the vintage. Exhibiting fantastic aromas and flavors of black cherries, melted licorice, liquid flower and pepper, this medium to full-bodied, decadently styled 2011 has solid mid-palate depth, ultra-fine, sweet tannin and serious length on the finish. Drink it over the coming decade or more. Drink now-2023.

Offers a silky feel, with dark plum, blackberry and raspberry fruit notes stitched with Earl Grey tea and warm tobacco leaf notes. Long and refined through the finish, revealing an echo of ganache.

About This Producer

The exceptional quality and stylistic excellence of this property's wines are due to the dedication, versatility and forward thinking of both the late Jean-Denis Vacheron (who married the owner's daughter, Sylvie Pouzin) and the current winemaker, Bruno Gaspard. Jean-Denis and Sylvie had taken over from her father, Claude, in 1996. However, in 2002, Jean-Denis was killed in a traffic accident and Sylvie took the reins. Today, with the help of winemaker Gaspard and oenologist Philippe Cambie, she has catapulted the domaine into the elite of the southern Rhone. Despite holding only 9 hectares of land, the domaine boasts venerable neighbors (Chateau Rayas and Chateau Beaucastel), and its vineyards have elements of the best of both these estates. The rocky-sandy soils provide excellent drainage and impart minerality to these Chateauneuf-du-Papes.
