(from fruit harvested between October 18 and 20): Saturated deep ruby. Fresh black fruit aromas complicated by violet pastille, pepper and herbs; darker in character than the 2009 but without quite that wine's complexity of impression of full ripeness. Then pleasingly fresh and primary in the mouth, with more thickness of texture to its dark fruit flavors than the nose suggests. Finishes long, but with slightly dusty tannins that will need time to harmonize. I look forward to seeing this again from bottle.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is a huge wine bursting with fruit. Here the fruit is darker, richer and spicier than the 2009. Savory herbs, leather and blackberries emerge in the glass, followed by hints of white flowers that add lift and brightness. This is a gorgeous, mineral-driven Cabernet endowed with gorgeous clarity and precision. A dazzling finish rounds things out in style.
