Bright full ruby. Vibrant, expressive aromas of blueberry, black cherry, menthol, graphite minerality and licorice. Plush, ripe and deep; not overly sweet but utterly seamless and refined. This wonderfully broad, rich wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate with flavors on the lively, extremely long finish. The tannins are remarkably fine-grained. This is remarkably balanced from the outset, but it would be a crime to open it too early.

Another wine flirting with perfection is the 2010 Vecina, the nearby neighbor of Harlan Estate on the western hills overlooking the Oakville Corridor, and further south, Yountville. A Graves-like effort, it displays notes of burning embers, scorched earth, creme de cassis, and charcoal. Primordial, dense, rich, full-bodied, masculine and backward, this is another example of a wine built for half a century of cellaring. Forget it for 7-10 years and watch the pleasure unfold thereafter.

Big and ripe, yet graceful and supple-textured, with generous plum, blueberry and blackberry fruit that's elegant and deceptively complex. Firms nicely on the finish, where the tannins take hold.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.
